OLYMPIA – The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking applications for the Recreational Crab and Shrimp Advisory Committee (RCSAC). The application period is open through Feb. 3, 2025.
The RCSAC is a volunteer committee that advises the Department on Puget Sound recreational crab and shrimp fishing issues. The committee discusses potential management actions, harvest seasons, regulations, education and outreach opportunities, and stakeholder communication.
“Advisors share insight, recommendations, and advice with Puget Sound shellfish crustacean management staff,” said Don Velasquez, a WDFW shellfish manager. “They provide an important communication link between WDFW staff and recreational crab and shrimp harvesters.”
Advisors will be chosen based on their experience in recreational crab and shrimp fisheries and their ability to address issues thoughtfully and productively. Additional criteria includes a willingness to engage and communicate effectively with fishery managers and others. Advisors will be expected to become or remain informed on recreational crab and shrimp fishery issues. They should be able to provide objective assessments based on experience and first-hand information about the fisheries, harvest-allocation, and conservation issues.
Applicants do not need to be affiliated with an organized group. Anyone can apply, including those who may require reasonable accommodations to participate as an advisory committee member.
Interested applicants should review the WDFW Recreational Crab and Shrimp Advisory Committee webpage and the advisory group handbook (PDF).
WDFW must receive applications by Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. Applications may be submitted via the Puget Sound Recreational Crab and Shrimp Advisory Committee webpage. Applications may also be emailed to Don.Velasquez@dfw.wa.gov or mailed to WDFW Fish Program, Attn: Crustacean Manager, 375 Hudson St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.
Applicants should be available for advisory committee meetings twice per year. The committee may hold additional virtual meetings during the year to discuss in-season management issues.
The group will be comprised of 10 to 12 members. New advisory appointments will be for two-year terms, beginning March 1, 2025. Applicants will be notified of appointments by Feb. 15, 2025.
Compensation and reimbursements available
Advisory groups are a unique opportunity for people to share their knowledge and expertise with the Department. To reduce barriers for people to engage, WDFW offers compensation for advisory group members’ time and reimbursements for childcare, adult care, lodging, meals, and mileage. WDFW is following guidelines from the Office of Equity for advisory group compensation and reimbursements.
Washington residents who serve on advisory groups in a professional role and are otherwise compensated for their involvement are not eligible for compensation. Reimbursement rates are available on the Office of Financial Management’s website. Compensation rates range from $45 for one hour to $200 maximum per day.
All members of the public are invited to apply regardless of race, color, sex, age, national origin, language proficiency, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, status as a veteran, or basis of disability.
Those interested in joining are also encouraged to review the WDFW Advisory Member Handbook (PDF) and the advisory groups and committees webpage for background information.
