OLYMPIA - Prospective hunters can learn about firearm safety, gun handling, sportsmanship and wildlife conservation during a July 22-24 training session in Lewis County sponsored by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
The training session will be conducted by state-certified hunter education instructors and fulfills state hunter-education certification requirements for those born after Jan. 1, 1972. While geared toward young hunters, classes are open to hunters of all ages.
To complete certification, each student must achieve a passing score on a written examination and an outdoor field course that simulates actual hunting conditions. Each participant must also safely handle and fire a .223 rifle under the direct supervision of instructors. Shotguns, rifles, muzzleloaders and archery equipment will be provided for participants to handle and fire.
Training will be held at Camp Singing Wind, a Camp Fire USA facility located two miles east of Toledo in Lewis County. Sessions are scheduled July 22 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.; July 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and July 24 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Parents must accompany students younger than 12 years of age during the entire course. Parents with students under 18 years of age must attend the introductory session on July 22 and sign a parent release form.
Pre-registration is required, and no more than 125 students will be accepted. Registration forms are available from Camp Fire USA, Hunter Education Jamboree, P.O. Box 503, Toledo, WA 98591, or by calling Camp Singing Wind at (360) 864-4259.
The nonrefundable fee for each student for the three-day session is $25, which includes two lunches, ammunition costs and facility operations. Checks should be made out to Camp Fire USA.
