WESTPORT--The sport salmon fishery here will close at 11:59 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 16), the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today.

Fishery managers from Washington, Oregon and the National Marine Fisheries Service are scheduled to meet on Monday to determine if additional ocean fisheries can be scheduled.

WDFW fishery managers said 1,098 chinook and 5,843 coho had been caught by anglers off Westport (Marine Area 2) since the fishery opened Aug. 3. The area has a quota of 7,400 coho.

Doug Milward, ocean fishery manager for WDFW, predicted fishing could be so heavy Sunday most of the remaining 1,557 coho in the quota could be taken.

Monday's meeting will review Sunday's harvest at Westport. Fish managers may attempt to schedule further fisheries based on the salmon remaining in the Westport and Ilwaco (Marine Area 1) quotas. Ilwaco closed to sport salmon fishing on Aug. 9.

Neah Bay (Marine Area 4) and Buoy 10 in the Columbia River (part of Marine Area 1) remain open to sport salmon fishing.
