Additional days of Chinook fishing to open in Marine Area 10

Action: Opens Chinook fishing for additional days in Marine Area 10 (except Elliott Bay), from Aug. 18 through Aug. 20. Maintains previously announced changes to coho retention.

Species affected: Salmon.

Location: Marine Area 10

Specific Locations, Dates, and Rules:

Marine Area 10, except Elliott Bay, Shilshole Bay, Sinclair Inlet and Port Orchard, and Year-round piers (Bremerton Boardwalk, Illahee State Park Pier, Seacrest Pier, and Waterman Pier):

  • Immediately, through Aug. 17:  Salmon daily limit is 2 including no more than 1 coho. No min. size. Release Chinook, chum.
  • Aug. 18 through Aug. 20:  Salmon daily limit is 2 including no more than 1 hatchery Chinook and 1 coho. Chinook min. size is 22”. Other salmon species no min. size.  Release wild Chinook and chum.
  • Aug. 21 through Sept. 30:  Salmon daily limit is 2 including no more than 1 coho. No min. size. Release Chinook, chum.
  • Oct. 1 through Oct. 31:  Salmon daily limit 2 including no more than 1 coho. No min. size. Release Chinook.

Elliott Bay:  Waters of Elliott Bay east of a line from West Point to Alki Point and including Harbor Island (Duwamish Waterways):

  • Immediately, through Aug. 17: Salmon closed.
  • Aug. 18 through Sept. 30:  Salmon daily limit is 2 including no more than 1 coho. No min. size. Release Chinook, chum.
  • Oct. 1 through Oct. 31:  Salmon daily limit 2 including no more than 1 coho. No min. size. Release Chinook.

Shilshole Bay:  Waters of Shilshole Bay southeast of a line from Meadow Point to West Point:

  • Immediately, through Aug. 31:  Salmon closed.
  • Sept. 1 through Sept. 30:  Salmon daily limit 2 including no more than 1 coho. No min. size. Release Chinook and chum.
  • Oct. 1 through Oct. 31:  Salmon daily limit 2 including no more than 1 coho. No min. size. Release Chinook.

Sinclair Inlet and Port Orchard:  Waters of Sinclair Inlet and Port Orchard south of the Manette Bridge in Bremerton, south of a line drawn true west from Battle Point, and west of a line drawn true south from Point White:

  • Immediately, through Sept. 30:  Salmon daily limit is 3 including no more than 1 coho. Chinook min. size is 22”. Other salmon species no min. size.  Release wild Chinook and chum.  Two-pole endorsement is allowed.
  • Oct. 1 through Oct. 31:  Salmon daily limit 2 including no more than 1 coho. No min. size. Release Chinook.

Reason for action: Catch estimates for the Marine Area 10 summer Chinook fishery indicate that through August 13, 2023, 63% of the harvest quota (2,235 of 3,566) and 80% of sublegal encounters (6,219 of 7,748) have been reached. WDFW has determined there is sufficient quota to reopen for three additional days of Chinook retention during the 2023 summer season.
