Action: Anglers may keep one adult Chinook as part of the six adult salmon daily limit on the lower Cowlitz River.
Species affected: Chinook salmon
Effective dates: Sept. 14 through Dec. 31, 2008
Location: Cowlitz River from boundary markers at mouth to 400 feet below Mayfield Dam.
Reason for action: Fall Chinook returns to Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery to date are looking positive although it's still early in the run. Through September 10, a total of 716 adult fall Chinook had returned to the hatchery. Pre-season, only 1,800 fish were expected to return. The hatchery escapement goal is 2,600 fish which is expected to be met based on the early returns and historic run patterns.
Other information: The salmon daily limit is 6 fish of which all may be adults. Only 1 of the adults may be a Chinook. Adult Chinook, fin clipped or not, may be retained; however wild Chinook jacks must be released. All salmon other than hatchery coho and Chinook must be released. Effective October 1, adult Chinook must be released from Blue Creek to Mill Creek.
Closed waters and night closure, non-buoyant lure, boat, and access restrictions remain the same as listed in the 2008/2009 Fishing in Washington pamphlet.
