Canyon Creek in Whatcom County
will close July 7 to all fishing

Action: Close all fishing on the lower portion of Canyon Creek, tributary to the North Fork Nooksack River

Effective dates: July 7, 2005 through October 31, 2005 (note: Canyon Creek closes to fishing beginning Nov. 1 under permanent regulations)

Species affected: All fish

Location: From the mouth of Canyon Creek to Canyon Creek Road Bridge on USFS Road # 31 (approximately river mile 5.5).

Reason for action: To protect listed spring chinook and native char during spawning season. Canyon Creek provides essential holding and spawning habitat for both these species. Low water flows on the lower section of Canyon Creek impair fish passage upstream, leaving the fish vulnerable to disturbance.
