Catch-and-release only for recreational Columbia River white sturgeon fishing

Action: Anglers must release all sturgeon.

Effective Date: May 5, 2020

Locations and rules: from Bonneville Dam to Priest Rapids Dam and adjacent tributaries.

Immediately through December 31 catch-and-release only in Bonneville Reservoir, The Dalles Reservoir, and John Day Reservoir per permanent regulations.

Year-round catch-and-release from McNary Dam to Priest Rapids Dam.

Species affected: White sturgeon

Reason for action: These rules were adopted and made permanent prior to the fishing closure associated with the COVID19 pandemic. This notice serves as a reminder to anglers of the change in permanent rules.

Additional information: Catch-and-release fishing for sturgeon will continue to be allowed except in designated spawning sanctuaries, which are closed to all sturgeon fishing May 1 through August 31. These measures were implemented to help ensure the long-term viability of the population.
