Chinook retention to close in Marine Areas 5 and 6

August 3, 2007

Action: Closes retention of hatchery Chinook in Areas 5 and 6.

Effective Date: Effective 12:01 a.m. Aug. 5, 2007.

Species affected: Chinook salmon.

Location: Catch Record Area 5 (Sekiu) and the portion of Area 6 west of Ediz Hook at Port Angeles.

Reason for action: Estimates indicate that the Chinook quota will be harvested by the end of the day Aug. 4, 2007.

Other information: Retention of wild Chinook is already prohibited. With this regulation, all Chinook must be released in Area 5 and all of Area 6. Both areas remain open to salmon fishing for pink, sockeye, and hatchery coho. Pink salmon catches should be on the increase. Single-point barbless hooks are still required.
