Columbia River to reopen for chinook retention upstream from the Lewis River

September 18, 2008

Action: The mainstem Columbia River upstream from the mouth of the Lewis River to Bonneville Dam will reopen to Chinook retention.

Effective dates: Sept. 20 through Dec. 31, 2008.

Species affected: Chinook salmon.

Location: The mainstem Columbia River from a line projected from a boundary marker on the lower end of Bachelor Island across to the Warrior Rock Lighthouse upstream to Bonneville Dam.

Other Information: Daily limit is 6 salmon of which no more than 2 may be adults. Only 1 may be an adult Chinook. Any Chinook, fin clipped or not, may be retained. Release wild coho, sockeye, and chum. Under permanent regulations, Beacon Rock to Bonneville Dam is closed to fishing for salmon beginning November 1.

The mainstem Columbia River from a line projected from a boundary marker on the lower end of Bachelor Island across to the Warrior Rock Lighthouse downstream to the Rocky Point Tongue Point line will remain open for hatchery coho and hatchery steelhead but remains closed for all Chinook (adults and jacks). Buoy 10 remains closed to fishing for salmon and steelhead until further notice.

Reason for action: The Upriver Bright run size has been upgraded and harvestable numbers of Chinook are available under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) guidelines. However, most of the allowable Lower River Wild (including Lewis River) fall Chinook impacts allocated to the recreational sector have been taken.
