Columbia River spring chinook sport fishery closes
above Bonneville Dam Monday, May 10

Action: Sunday May 9 will be the last day to fish for spring chinook and steelhead between Bonneville and McNary dams.

Species affected: Salmon and steelhead.

Effective date: May 10, 2010.

Location: From Tower Island power lines in Bonneville Pool upstream to McNary Dam, plus Washington bank between Bonneville Dam and the Tower Island power lines.

Reason for action: Large numbers of spring chinook caught combined with uncertainty surrounding the upriver runsize has prompted Washington and Oregon salmon managers to take action to close the fishery before the scheduled May 31 ending date. An estimated 3,400 chinook will have been caught in this area by May 9.

The hatchery summer chinook and hatchery steelhead season above Bonneville Dam is scheduled to start as scheduled on June 16.
