Crab fishing opens June 6 in the Deception Pass-Langley
area


Action: The recreational crab fishery opens Fridays through Mondays
in the rest of Marine Area 8-2, north of a line from Camano Head to Sandy Point, and all of Marine Area 8-1.

Effective date: June 6, 2003, at 7 a.m., Fridays through Mondays.

Species affected: Dungeness and red rock crab.

Location: The areas to be opened Fridays through Mondays include all
waters of Marine Area 8-1, and the Saratoga Passage portion of Marine Area 8-2. The areas include Deception Pass/Coronet Bay, Skagit Bay/Oak Harbor, Holmes
Harbor, and Elger Bay/Langley.

Reason for action: Shell condition testing indicates the molt has been
completed and all areas of 8-1 and 8-2 can open for harvest.

Other information:
Marine Areas 9, 10, 11,12 and 13 will open to all sport crabbing
at 7 a.m. on June 1, seven days per week with a 6 crab daily limit.
The southern portion of Marine Area 8-2 opened on May 16,
Fridays through Mondays only with a 6 crab daily limit. Catch projections
indicate the sport quota in this area will be taken by Aug. 11, at which time
the area will close to sport harvesting. This area could open for winter harvest
opportunities if additional quota remains, based on September catch record
card survey data.
The Saratoga Passage portion of Marine Area 8-2, north of
a line drawn between Camano Head and Sandy Pt., and all of Marine Area 8-1
will open on a Friday through Monday schedule to all sport crabbing at 7 a.m.
June 6 with a 6 crab daily limit. Catch projections indicate the sport quota
in this area will be taken by September 2, at which time the area will close
to sport harvesting at 8 p.m. This area will reopen for winter harvest opportunities
if additional quota remains, based on September catch record card survey data.
