Hamma Hamma River will close to fishing

January 19, 2005

Action: Close the Hamma Hamma River in Mason County to all fishing.

Effective date: January 20, 2005 through May 31, 2005

Species affected: All game fish including steelhead

Location: Hamma Hamma River from mouth upstream.

Reason for action: Fishing would jeopardize the research and monitoring components of an ongoing wild winter steelhead recovery program in the Hamma Hamma River.

Other information: The recovery program was initiated in 1998 and has shown promising results with increases in the number of wild winter steelhead spawning in the Hamma Hamma River. The recovery program is a collaborative effort between the National Marine Fisheries Service, Long Live the Kings, Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, local treaty tribes, and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
