Hatchery spring chinook daily limit and
area reduced on the Wind River

Action: Only one hatchery spring chinook may be retained in the daily limit from the Wind River in 2007. In addition, only the area from the mouth to 400 feet below Shipherd Falls will be open to fishing.

Effective dates: March 16 through June 30.

Species affected: Chinook and steelhead

Location: Wind River from mouth (boundary line/markers) to 400 feet below Shipherd Falls:

Reasons for action: Only 2,100 adult spring chinook are expected to return to Wind River in 2007. An estimated 1,300 fish are needed to meet escapement goals leaving 800 for tribal and sport harvest. A full sport fishery will not meet escapement needs.

Spring chinook returns to Wind and Klickitat rivers plus Drano Lake are expected to be down from 2006. Returns to these systems will be intensively monitored in 2007. Though there are no regulation changes at this time for the Klickitat River or Drano Lake, anglers should be alert for possible emergency actions beginning in mid May for those areas and the Wind River.

Other information: Daily limit is one hatchery salmon or hatchery steelhead. Release all wild chinook and wild steelhead. Minimum size 12 inches for salmon and 20 inches for steelhead. Night closure and non buoyant lure restrictions will be in effect. When non-buoyant lure restrictions are in effect, only fish hooked inside the mouth may be retained.
