Hatchery steelhead daily limit will increase on
the North Fork Lewis River

Action: North Fork Lewis River anglers may retain up to three hatchery steelhead beginning Saturday May 17.

Species affected: Steelhead

Effective dates by location: Effective May 17 through October 31 from the I-5 Bridge upstream to Colvin Creek (located upstream from the salmon hatchery) and May 17 through September 30 from Colvin Creek upstream to the overhead powerlines below Merwin Dam.

Reason for action: There has been a good early showing of hatchery summer runs to date. Through May 7, nearly 50 hatchery summer run steelhead had returned to the trap at the dam. Excess hatchery fish are available for harvest.

Other information: Release wild steelhead and all other trout. Fishing from any floating device from Johnson Creek upstream will be prohibited beginning August 1.

This year's hatchery summer run steelhead two-salt return is from a smolt plant of nearly 300,000 fish released in 2006. Some surplus hatchery adult steelhead will be recycled downstream for additional opportunity.
