Klineline Pond Fishing closure for Kids Fishing Event

April 1, 2004

Action: Closes Klineline Pond to fishing by the public two days prior to the fishing event, as well as the day of the event. The pond will open for the fishing event Saturday, April 17th to registered participants only. The pond will open for fishing to the public on April 18th.

Effective date: April 15 - 12::01 a.m. entire pond closed to public fishing
April 17 - 7::00 a.m. netted area of pond open to registered participants until 1::45 p.m.
April 18 - 12::01 a.m. entire pond re-opens to fishing.

Location: Klineline Pond is located at Salmon Creek Park, Vancouver Washington.

Reason for action: This rule change is necessary to assure a safe and successful Fishing Kids event. The fish will be planted two days prior to the event to better acclimate them before the event. Several thousand fish will be placed into netted areas along the shoreline of this pond. On the day of the event, pre-registered kids will be allowed to fish within these netted areas.
The reason for keeping the pond closed until the day after the event is to ensure safety for the public as well as the event participants while the event is shutting down and equipment and nets are being removed. This year we will have several hundred feet of nets that will need to be pulled from the lake shoreline. Over the past three years, trying to pull these nets while the anglers were fishing was not only a hazard to staff but a hazard to the anglers. To alleviate any problems and safety issues, fishing should not be allowed until the morning after the event.

Other information: The Fishing Kids event has been held at Klineline Pond for three years. Prior to this, the event was sponsored by the local community. This event brings 1200 registered kids as well as families, friends and general members of the public. Even with Enforcement Officers present, people fishing immediately after the event has hindered equipment removal and created a safety concern.
