Limit increased for hatchery spring chinook
jacks at Drano Lake

Action: Up to six hatchery spring Chinook jacks may be retained effective June 1. Wednesdays June 4 and June 11 will be closed to all fishing.

Species affected: Chinook and steelhead

Effective dates: June 1 through June 30, 2008.

Location: Drano Lake downstream of markers on point of land downstream and across from Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery and upstream of Hwy. 14 Bridge.

Daily limits: Salmon daily limit six fish with up to 2 adults may be retained. In addition two hatchery steelhead may be kept. Release wild steelhead and wild Chinook. Release all trout other than steelhead. Minimum size 12 inches for salmon and 20 inches for steelhead.

Other information: Night closure and non-buoyant lure restrictions are in effect.

Reason for action: Large numbers of hatchery spring Chinook jacks have crossed Bonneville Dam and have been found in Drano Lake creel surveys. To date, more jacks have been counted at Bonneville Dam since at least 1976 with the exception of the year 2000. Jacks have comprised up to half the recent sport catch at Drano Lake. Increasing the daily limit from the current two hatchery salmon or hatchery steelhead will provide additional opportunity to harvest those fish.

The two Wednesday closures in June are necessary for the Yakama tribal fisheries scheduled to occur on those dates.
