Action: Closes salmon angling upstream of Rocky Point/Tongue Point to Bonneville Dam, including Camas Slough.
Species affected: Salmon and steelhead
Effective Date: Sept. 4, 2021, until further notice
Locations, dates, and rules:
(1) From a true north and south line through Buoy 10 to a projected line from Rocky Point on the Washington bank through Red Buoy 44 to the red navigation marker 2 at Tongue Point on the Oregon bank (Rocky Point/Tongue Point line):
Sept. 4 through Sept. 6: Daily limit 2. Salmon min. size 16". Release all salmon and steelhead other than hatchery coho.
(2) From the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line to a line projected from the Warrior Rock lighthouse through Red Buoy 4 to the marker atop the piling dolphin located at the downstream end of Bachelor Island on the Washington Shore (Warrior Rock Line):
Sept. 4, until further notice: Closed to fishing for and retention of salmon and steelhead.
(3) From the Warrior Rock line to Bonneville Dam, including Camas Slough:
Sept. 7, until further notice: Closed to fishing for and retention of salmon and steelhead.
Reason for action: Catches to-date in the Tongue Point/Rocky Point to Warrior Rock line area are exceeding expectations and harvest limits for the of Lower River Hatchery (LRH) Chinook have been met for the Tongue Point/Rocky Point to Bonneville Dam area. LRH are the surrogate for ESA listed Lower Columbia River (LCR) wild Tules, and return to tributaries downstream of Bonneville Dam. The delayed closure for the Warrior Rock line to Bonneville Dam area provides additional opportunity over the holiday weekend, but closes as well because LRH impacts occur in this area. Fisheries are managed to remain under ESA impact limits. Joint State action was necessary to limit additional LRH mortalities.
Please note that Camas Slough is included with the closure from Warrior Rock upstream to Bonneville Dam, effective Sept. 7. This closure will minimize LRH impacts from mainstem Columbia River fisheries.
The salmon fishery from Buoy 10 to the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line will return to permanent rules as listed in the Washington Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet Sept. 7.
Staff will continue to monitor the run and assess catch information to determine when and if the fishery can re-open at a later date.
