Lower Columbia River salmon and steelhead fishery update

August 25, 2021

Action: Closes Chinook retention

Species affected: Salmon

Effective Date: Aug. 27 through Sept. 6, 2021

Location: From the Buoy 10 line upstream to the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line

Rule: Daily limit 2. Salmon min. size 16". Release all salmon and steelhead other than hatchery coho.

Reason for action: Strong, sustained fishing effort at Buoy 10, combined with high catch rates, meant the fishery reached its allowable impacts on Chinook earlier than expected Due to the higher than expected impacts to Lower River Hatchery (LRH) Chinook, Joint State action was necessary to limit additional LRH mortalities and allow the hatchery coho retention fishery to remain open.
