Lower Columbia River spring chinook fishery closes beginning April 14

April 11, 2006

Date: April 11, 2006

Lower Columbia River spring chinook fishery closes beginning Friday, April 14

Action: Closes the on-going Columbia River spring Chinook fishery downstream of the I-5 Bridge.

Effective date: Beginning 12:01 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2006

Species affected: Chinook, Steelhead, Shad

Location: From the I-5 Bridge downstream to the mouth of the Columbia River.

Reason for action: A conservative approach is necessary at this time to ensure that other spring Chinook fisheries can occur if the run size is less than predicted. The harvest rates in the sport fishery indicate a good return, but the Bonneville Dam counts are very poor at this time.

Other Information: The area from the I-5 Bridge upstream to Bonneville Dam will remain closed. The area above Bonneville Dam will remain open through April 30, 2006.
