Lower Klickitat River to close to adult spring chinook retention beginning June 4

Action: All chinook equal to or greater than 24 inches must be released downstream from the Fisher Hill Bridge beginning Monday, June 4.

Effective dates: June 4 through July 31, 2007

Species affected: Chinook

Location: The Klickitat River from the mouth upstream to the Fisher Hill Bridge (located about 2 miles upstream from the mouth).

Reasons for action: The return of spring chinook to the Klickitat River is below pre-season expectations at this time. Through May 30, only 47 fish had returned to Klickitat Salmon Hatchery. The hatchery escapement goal is 500 fish.

Daily Limit: 6 chinook - jacks only. Only adipose fin-clipped (hatchery) fish may be retained. Minimum size, 12 inches.

Other information: The area from 400 feet upstream of the #5 fishway (located just upstream from the Fisher Hill Bridge) upstream to the boundary markers below the Klickitat Salmon Hatchery is currently open for hatchery jack chinook and trout including hatchery steelhead. In addition, the area from the mouth to Fisher Hill Bridge is open for trout including hatchery steelhead. Fisher Hill Bridge downstream is now open 7 days per week.
