Marine Area 10 will close to salmon fishing

October 16, 2015

Action: Fishing for salmon is closed in Marine Area 10, including from piers.

Effective Date: Oct. 19, 2015, until further notice.

Species affected: Salmon

Location: Marine Area 10 within Puget Sound.

Reason for action: Estimated total encounters of chinook salmon from Oct.1 to date indicate that this fishery will soon reach the total chinook encounters (legal and sublegal chinook combined) limit as specified in the fishery management plan agreed-to between the state and tribes pre-season during the North of Falcon process. Closure to salmon fishing until further notice is needed to protect Endangered Species Act-listed sublegal chinook salmon that are being encountered incidentally by anglers at a higher rate than expected.

Other information: Anglers are reminded that all fishing for salmon will be closed in Area 10 starting Monday, including salmon fishing from beaches and piers. WDFW biologists will reassess estimates of chinook encounters in Area 10 through Sunday Oct. 18 and may adjust the fishery regulations thereafter as needed.
