Marine Area 12 and a portion of Marine Area 9
will remain open for crab harvest
Action: Sport crabbing to remain open in Hood Canal (Marine Area 12) and a portion of Marine Area 9.
Effective Dates: Immediately through 5:00 p.m. Feb. 28, 2016.
Species affected: Dungeness and red rock crab.
Locations: Marine Area 12 and that portion of Marine Area 9 north of the Hood Canal Bridge to the Foulweather Bluff to Olele Point line.
Reason for action: Surveys indicate there are sufficient crabs available to allow for two more months of crabbing in these areas.
Other information: All other areas of Puget Sound will close at 5:00 p.m. Dec. 31, 2015. Everyone still needs submit their winter CRCs or report crab catch online by February 1 (even if you are crabbing or going to crab in Hood Canal or the open portion of Marine Area 9 during January/February). You will not need to carry a CRC during January/February when crabbing in Hood Canal or the open portion of Marine Area 9, however, you will need to carry a current shellfish license with a Puget Sound crab endorsement.
In lieu of the CRC data, WDFW will be conducting field based surveys to estimate the recreational catch in Hood Canal for January/February.
Please note that crab abundance is noticeably higher in the northern portion of Hood Canal compared to the southern portion,
