North Fork Toutle River closed to Chinook retention

October 15, 2024

Action: Closes Chinook retention.

Effective dates: Oct. 16 through Nov. 30, 2024.

Species affected: Chinook salmon.

Location: Toutle River, North Fork from the mouth (confluence of the South Fork) to the posted markers downstream of the Fish Collection Facility.

Salmon Rules: Daily limit six hatchery coho including no more than three adults. Minimum size 12 inches. Release all salmon other than hatchery coho.

Reason for action: Broodstock collection at the North Toutle hatchery is lower than anticipated. Modifying fisheries to restrict Chinook retention will help the hatchery meet broodstock collection goals while allowing continued fishing for coho salmon.

Additional information: Coho that are 20 inches or greater in length are classified as adults. Fishery managers will continue to monitor Chinook returns to the North Toutle Hatchery to determine when fisheries may be reopened. The posted fishing boundary markers are located at the standard 400-foot location below the hatchery rack. All other permanent rules published in the 2024-25 Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet remain in effect.
