Recreational Columbia River smelt season to close

Action: Closes smelt fishery, prior to the scheduled closing date of March 31.

Effective dates: March 11, 2010.

Species affected: Eulachon smelt.

Location: Columbia River.

Reason for action: The 2010 mainstem fisheries were developed to act as a test fishery in an effort to gauge the abundance of 2010 return. The 2010 smelt run appears to be complete and no additional fishing time is required. This rule also is consistent with Columbia River Compact of March 8, 2010.

Other Information: Beginning April 1, the fishery will remain closed in
Washington waters under permanent regulations for the Columbia River.
