Recreational crabbing closes in Grays Harbor (except the Westport Boat Basin)

Action: Closes recreational crabbing.

Effective date: Immediately until further notice.

Species affected: Crab

Location: Waters of Marine Area 2-2 (Grays Harbor), except inside the Westport Boat Basin.

Reason for action: Based on recent marine toxin test results the Washington Department of Health has determined that Dungeness crab are unsafe for human consumption in that portion of Marine Area 1 and Marine Area 2 south of Point Chehalis and in Marine Area 2-2 (Grays Harbor), except inside the Westport Boat Basin (see definition below).

Additional Information: Waters of Marine Area 1, Marine area 2 south of Point Chehalis, Marine Area 2-1 (Willapa Bay) and Marine Area 2-2 (except the Westport Boat Basin) remain closed to recreational crabbing, until further notice.
The Westport Boat Basin is defined as those waters of Grays Harbor inside the breakwater surrounding the boat basin and inside of lines drawn between lighted day markers 10 and 11 and between lighted day markers 1 and 2 which mark the two entrances to the boat basin. WAC 220-300-320.
DOH recommends that crabbers who are fishing outside of the current closure area remove the crab viscera from their catch to avoid any exposure to possible toxins.
