Recreational halibut fishing will reopen in August in Ilwaco

July 14, 2006

Action: Marine Area 1 will reopen for halibut fishing; anglers may fish for, retain, possess and land Pacific halibut into Marine Area 1.

Effective dates: From 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 4, 2006, until the quota is projected to be attained. The fishery will be open three days per week, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Species affected: Pacific halibut

Location: Marine Fish Catch Area 1

Reasons for action: There is sufficient quota to reopen the Columbia River (Ilwaco) recreational halibut fishery for the first weekend in August. Beginning this year, the Pacific Fishery Management Councils Catch Sharing Plan for halibut was revised to split the halibut quota into two portions 70% for the fishery opening on May 1; and 30% for an additional fishing opportunity beginning the first Friday in August (August 4).

However, there may not be enough quota to remain open during the second weekend in August. Following the August 4-6 opener, fishery managers will produce a catch estimate and determine whether there is sufficient quota to continue the fishery during the second weekend in August. The Department will update our website and recreational fishing hotline with the new season information as soon as it is available.

Other information: It is unlawful to retain or possess any bottomfish in Area 1, except sablefish or Pacific cod, with a halibut onboard.
