Recreational shrimp fishing in southern
San Juan Islands closes June 2 at 9 p.m.

Action: Recreational shrimp fishing will close on June 2, 2004, at 9 p.m. in the southern portion of Marine Area 7 - roughly south of Lopez Island and San Juan Island, including the Biz Point and Iceberg Point shrimp fishing areas.

Effective date: Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at 9 p.m.

Species affected: All shrimp species.

Location: Closure area - the southern portion of Marine Area 7 - all waters south of a line from Biz Point on Fidalgo Island to Cape St. Mary on Lopez Island, then south of the shores of Lopez Island to Davis Point, then south of a line from Davis Point to Cattle Point on San Juan Island, then south of the shores of San Juan Island to Lime Kiln Point light, then south of a line due west from Lime Kiln Point light to the international boundary.

Reason for action: The recreational share of spot shrimp has been reached in the area closed under this rule.

Other information: The remainder of Marine Area 7 remains open for shrimp fishing (northern portion). Shrimp fishers are reminded that the tidal currents in the San Juan Islands are very swift, and gear loss is a much more common occurrence than in central Puget Sound or Hood Canal. Check current tables, add additional weight to pots, and add extra buoys (all yellow) when shrimp fishing in Marine Area 7.
