Release of sport-caught sturgeon between The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam

June 13, 2003

Action: The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will require anglers to release all white sturgeon caught between The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam on the Columbia River.

Effective date: 12:01 a.m., June 21, through December 31, 2003.

Species affected: White Sturgeon

Location: The Columbia River and tributaries from The Dalles Dam upstream to John Day Dam.

Reason for action: The closure to retention of sturgeon was adopted because Washington and Oregon fish managers estimate that the harvest guideline of 400 fish will be caught by June 21.

Other information: The section of the river between Bonneville Dam and The Dalles Dam, and the section between John Day Dam and McNary Dam will remain open to retention. The section of the river from Bonneville Dam downstream to the Wauna Powerlines is closed to the retention of sturgeon through June 30, 2003.
