Re-open a portion of the mainstem Nooksack with restricted fishing regulations
Action: Re-open seasons for game fish and salmon in select areas of the Nooksack Basin under fishing restrictions.
Rules:
Only one single-point barbless hook measuring 1/2" or less from point to shank may be used. Bait prohibited.
Night closure
Salmon minimum size 12 inches. Daily limit 2 plus 2 additional coho. Release wild chinook.
Trout - minimum size 14 inches. Daily limit 2.
Other gamefish - statewide minimum size and daily limit.
Species affected: All species.
Location: The mainstem Nooksack from the Lummi Indian Reservation boundary to the yellow marker at the FFA high school barn in Deming.
Effective dates: Immediately until further notice.
Previously announced restrictions and closures remain in effect on the following Nooksack Basin reaches and tributaries:
1) North Fork Nooksack from the mouth to North Fork Falls and all tributaries draining into the North Fork Nooksack from the mouth to the Nooksack Falls
2) The Middle Fork Nooksack from mouth to the City of Bellingham Diversion Dam and all tributaries draining into the Middle Fork Nooksack from the mouth to the Diversion Dam
3) South Fork Nooksack from the mouth to Skookum Creek.
4) South Fork Nooksack from Wanlick Creek upstream, including Wanlick Creek and all tributaries.
5) Mainstem Nooksack from the yellow marker at the FFA high school barn in Deming to the forks.
Reasons for action: Nooksack spring chinook have experienced high pre-spawn mortality rates and although flows and river temperatures have improved, restrictions remain to protect spring chinook previously exposed to drought-related stress.
Other information: Anglers are reminded that the South Fork Nooksack from Skookum Creek to Wanlick Creek is closed by permanent rules. Angling for salmon and gamefish will reopen as listed in the Sport Fishing Rules 2015/2016 pamphlet edition, FISHING IN WASHINGTON, in the above described reaches when spring chinook spawning is completed.
