Retention fishery for sturgeon to close
between The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam

Action: The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is closing the retention fishery for sturgeon between The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam on the Columbia River.

Effective date: 12:01 a.m., March 15, through Dec. 31, 2008.

Species affected: Sturgeon

Location: The Columbia River and tributaries from The Dalles Dam upstream to John Day Dam.

Reason for action: The closure date for retention of sturgeon was adopted because Washington and Oregon fish managers estimate that the harvest guideline of 100 fish was exceeded on March 9.

Other information: The sections of the Columbia River between John Day Dam and McNary Dam, and between Bonneville Dam and The Dalles Dam, will remain open to sturgeon retention. Catch and release of sturgeon is still allowed between The Dalles and John Day dams. The spawning sanctuary from the Rufus grain elevator to John Day Dam will be closed to all sturgeon fishing from May 1 through July 31.

Information contact: Dennis Gilliland, (360) 906-6733.
