Retention fishery for sturgeon to close
between The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam

Action: The retention fishery for sturgeon between The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam on the Columbia River will close March 29.

Effective date: 12:01 a.m., March 29, through Dec. 31, 2007.

Species affected: Sturgeon

Location: The Columbia River and tributaries from The Dalles Dam upstream to John Day Dam

Reason for action: The closure is necessary because Washington and Oregon fish managers estimate that the harvest guideline of 100 fish will be caught by March 29.

Other information: The sections of the Columbia River between Bonneville Dam and
The Dalles Dam, and between John Day Dam and McNary Dam, remain open to sturgeon retention. Catch and release of sturgeon is still allowed between The Dalles and John Day dams. The spawning sanctuary from the Rufus grain elevator to John Day Dam remains closed to all sturgeon fishing from May 1 through July 31.
