Retention of hatchery Chinook to close on Washougal River

Retention of hatchery Chinook to close on the Washougal River

Action: Closes retention of hatchery Chinook salmon.

Effective date: Oct. 1, 2022, until further notice.

Species affected: Chinook salmon.

Location: Washougal River, from the mouth to the bridge at Salmon Falls.

Rule: Salmon: Min. size 12 inches. Daily limit 6. Up to 3 adults may be retained. Release all salmon other than hatchery coho.

Reason for action: The number of fall Chinook that have returned to the Washougal River is far behind preseason forecasts. Historically run timing of tule fall Chinook salmon indicates that the vast majority have moved out of the mainstem Columbia and into tributary waters. Therefore, the vast majority of fall Chinook available to support Washougal River hatchery programs have moved into the river. Closing the Washougal River to hatchery Chinook retention will help increase the number of fish available for broodstock needs and help ensure future hatchery returns.

Additional information: WDFW will continue to monitor the fall Chinook return and hatchery broodstock collection to determine if and when further fishery modification is needed. The Washougal River remains open for retention of hatchery coho and hatchery steelhead. Anglers are reminded to check the Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet for additional information.
