Small sanctuary created around the fish release site
on the upper Cowlitz River

Action: The upper Cowlitz River from the Skate Creek (Franklin) Bridge in Packwood downstream 50 feet will be closed to all fishing.

Effective dates: April 9, 2016, until further notice

Species affected: All species including salmon

Reason for action: Salmon, including spring chinook, are being released into the upper Cowlitz River for sport harvest opportunity and reintroduction purposes. After being released, the fish tend to temporarily congregate at the release site. Providing a small sanctuary will allow the fish to disperse and reduce the potential for snagging.

Other information: On the upper Cowlitz through July, the salmon daily limit is 6 hatchery fish of which no more than 2 may be adults.
