Sport clam season shortened at Belfair State Park

December 20, 2012

Action: The sport clam fishing season will open on April 1, 2013.

Effective date: Belfair State Park: April 1, 2013 through April 30, 2013.

Species affected: All clams.

Location: Belfair State Park. This beach is located in Mason County on Hood Canal.

Reason for action: Recreational clamming effort at this beach increased significantly in 2012, and the state's clam share was overharvested, requiring a shorter season in 2013. A clam survey on the newly health-certified portion of this beach will be conducted in March 2013, and a possible season extension may follow, depending on the results of that survey. Oyster season will remain open year-round, including the newly health-certified area.
