Sport fishery for Columbia River
steelhead, jack chinook reinstated
Action: The Columbia River from the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line upstream to the I-5 Bridge will open to hatchery steelhead and hatchery jack chinook fishing June 16 under rules for those waters outlined in the Fishing in Washington rules pamphlet. Sockeye retention will be allowed concurrent with steelhead retention.
Effective date: June 12 through June 15, 2009.
Species affected: Hatchery steelhead, hatchery jack chinook and sockeye.
Location: Columbia River from the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line upstream to the I-5 Bridge.
Reason for action: The mainstem steelhead sport fishery can be reinstated in response to the current in-season run size estimate of spring chinook destined for areas above Bonneville Dam. Incidental handle of spring chinook is expected to be minimal.
The summer fishing season, which begins June 16, allows for the continued retention of hatchery steelhead as well as sockeye and also includes retention of non-adipose fin-clipped jacks. Refer to the 2009/2010 "Fishing in Washington" pamphlet for summer season fisheries and allowable catch.
