Sport shrimp fishing to close in Hood Canal, Discovery Bay and Marine Area 8

Action: Recreational shrimp fishing will close on May 18, 2005 in the Hood Canal and Discovery Bay shrimp districts, and on May 21 in Marine Area 8.

Effective dates: Hood Canal Shrimp District closes Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Discovery Bay Shrimp District closes Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. Marine Area 8 closes Saturday, May 21 2005 at 3:00 p.m.

Species affected: All shrimp

Location: All waters of the Hood Canal and Discovery Bay shrimp districts, and Marine Area 8 (8-1 and 8-2).

Reason for action: The recreational spot shrimp shares in these areas will be reached by the dates listed above.

Other information: The Discovery Bay Shrimp District will reopen for non-spot shrimp fishing opportunity on a daily basis starting June 1, 2005 south of a line from Contractors Point to Tukey Point. Marine Area 8 will reopen as well, with a 150-foot maximum fishing depth restriction. After June 1, pots can be tended only from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. It will be unlawful to possess spot shrimp and all spot shrimp caught must be immediately returned to the water unharmed. After June 1, the minimum mesh size for shrimp pots is one-half inch.
