Sport shrimp fishing closes immediately
in marine areas 9 and 10

* NOTE: Fishing rule update for Area 9 dated May 27
and update for Area 10 May 31.

Action: Recreational shrimp fishing is closed, effective immediately, in all waters of Marine Areas 9 and 10, which include the Edmonds and Seattle area shrimp fishing grounds.

Effective dates: Immediately.

Species affected: All shrimp.

Location: Marine Areas 9 and 10.

Reason for action: The recreational spot shrimp share in these areas has been reached.

Other information: In Marine Area 9 the 2005 shrimp fishing effort more than doubled from last year, increasing from an average of 187 pots counted per day last year to an average of 394 pots counted per day this year. In addition, the fishing was better, with the average Marine Area 9 boat bringing in 14.4 lbs of shrimp, versus 8.7 lbs last year. In Marine Area 10 the fishing effort was similar to last year, but once again fishing was better, especially in Elliott Bay, where the average boat landed 17.5 lbs of shrimp versus 12.9 lbs last year. Marine Area 11 was closed early this week after one day of fishing, resulting in the central basin being closed (9,10 and 11) for spot shrimp. Marine Area 9 will reopen for non-spot shrimp fishing opportunity on June 1st with a 150-foot maximum fishing depth restriction, except for Port Townsend Bay, which will reopen with an area closure north of the line from Kala Point to Walen Point. One-half inch shrimp pot mesh will be allowed after June 1st.
