Sport sturgeon retention season changes for The Dalles Pool

December 16, 2021

Action: Changes white sturgeon retention season structure from seven days per week, to three days per week.

Effective date: Jan. 1 through Jan. 26, 2022

Species affected: White sturgeon.

Location: From the Dalles Dam to John Day Dam and all adjacent Washington tributaries.

Rule: Open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays only. Daily limit 1 sturgeon. Min. fork length 43 inches, max. fork length 54 inches.

Reason for action: The three-days-per-week opening will help prolong the season in The Dalles Pool and allow managers to monitor catch rates more closely.

Additional information: The Dalles Pool remains open for catch-and-release fishing for sturgeon on days not open to retention, as do many other stretches of the Columbia. In addition, the Bonneville Pool (between Bonneville Dam and The Dalles Dam) and John Day Pool (between John Day Dam and McNary Dam) remain open to sturgeon retention seven-days-per-week starting January 1, 2022 following permanent rules.
