Spring chinook seasons set

March 10, 2004

Actions:
1. The mainstem Columbia River from the Tower Island power lines in Bonneville Pool upstream to McNary Dam will be open seven days/week for adipose fin-clipped spring chinook beginning March 16, 2004.

2. The mainstem Columbia River from the Buoy 10 line upstream to the I-5 Bridge will remain open for adipose fin-clipped salmon seven days/week.

3. The areas listed above will also be open to adipose fin-clipped steelhead and shad whenever spring chinook fishing is open.

Effective Date: Through May 15, 2004 or until guidelines are achieved, whichever occurs first.

Species affected: Hatchery spring chinook, hatchery steelhead, shad.

Location: The Columbia River from the Buoy 10 line upstream to McNary Dam.

Reason for action: The states of Washington and Oregon have developed a fishing plan for the Columbia River spring chinook season with the hope of extending the season for as long as possible, while remaining within the ESA guidelines for wild fish. Seasons have been structured to have minimal impact on the wild fish while providing opportunity for harvest of the abundant hatchery stocks. Fishing will be modified or halted once the guideline is projected to be reached

Other information: The daily limit for salmon is six fish of which only two may be adults and only adipose fin-clipped spring chinook may be retained. The daily limit for trout is two fish, with a minimum size of 12 inches. Wild chinook and wild steelhead must be released. Wild cutthroat must be released from Bonneville Dam downstream. There is no daily limit for shad.
