Steelhead retention will remain closed in the Columbia River below The Dalles Dam

August 29, 2019

Action: The Columbia River below The Dalles Dam will remain closed to steelhead retention through Sept. 30.

Effective date: Sept. 1 through Sept. 30, 2019.

Species affected: Steelhead.

Location: Mainstem Columbia River mouth (a true north and south line through Buoy 10) mouth upstream to The Dalles Dam.

Reason for action: The upriver steelhead run-size was recently downgraded. Several Washington hatcheries are projecting broodstock collection shortfalls. Closing the retention of hatchery steelhead will help to provide additional fish for hatchery broodstock and provide future fishing opportunity.

Additional information: All steelhead must be released in the mainstem Columbia River from Buoy 10 to Hwy 395 at Pasco, WA in the following areas:

Buoy 10 upstream to John Day Dam: Sept. 1-30;

John Day Dam upstream to McNary Dam: Sept. 1 through Oct. 31;

McNary Dam upstream to Hwy 395 at Pasco, Wash.: Oct. 1 through Nov. 31.

All other permanent rules remain in effect. Please refer to the 2019-2020 Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet for additional information.
