Sturgeon size limits switch to new fork length standard for 2009 lower Columbia River sturgeon fisheries

December 24, 2008

Action: For the Columbia River and tributaries from the Wauna power lines downstream to the mouth):
January 1 through April 30 Only white sturgeon between 38-inches fork length (and 54-inches fork length per permanent rule) may be retained.

The minimum size for white sturgeon retention for this area is scheduled to switch to 41-inches fork length effective May 9 (retention of white sturgeon is scheduled to be prohibited in this area May 1-8)

The new statewide 38-inch fork length minimum size limit and 54-inch fork length maximum size limit take effect January 1, 2009 for the Columbia River and tributaries from the Wauna power lines upstream to Bonneville Dam per permanent rule.

Effective date: Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2009

Location: The Columbia River and tributaries from Bonneville Dam downstream to the mouth.

Species affected: White Sturgeon

Reason for action: The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted new fork length measurement standards for retention of white sturgeon in recreational fisheries on February 1, 2008, for implementation January 1, 2009. The permanent rule covering sturgeon regulations for the Columbia River downstream of the Wauna power lines uses the old total length measurement standard. This action applies the new fork length measurement standard to retention of white sturgeon in this area. This rule is consistent with the February 2008 Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission decision and with Joint State hearing action of December 18, 2008.

Other information: Retention of green sturgeon is prohibited.
