Wild chinook release required at Buoy 10

August 20, 2013

Action: Chinook salmon must be adipose or ventral fin clipped to be retained.

Effective date: Aug. 23 through Sept. 1, 2013

Species affected: Chinook salmon

Location: From a true north and south line through Buoy 10 to a line from Rocky Point on the Washington bank through Red Buoy 44 to the navigation light at Tongue Point on the Oregon bank.

Reason for action: The Buoy 10 fishery at the mouth of the Columbia River is projected to reach the wild chinook mortality guideline prior to the planned date of September 1 without the implementation of a mark-selective fishery. The mark-selective fishery will allow the fishery to meet the preseason objective of having chinook retention through Sept.1.

Other information: Managers have set a meeting for Tuesday afternoon, August 27 to review the fishery and make any additional modifications if necessary. The salmonid daily limit is 2 fish of which no more than 1 may be a chinook. Release all salmonids other than hatchery chinook, hatchery coho, and hatchery steelhead. Only chinook with a clipped adipose fin and a healed scar at the location of the fin or a completely removed left ventral fin and a healed scar at the location of the fin may be retained. chinook minimum size is 24 inches; coho minimum size 16 inches.

Effective Sept. 2 through Sept. 30, 2013 only hatchery coho and hatchery steelhead may be retained. Release all chinook.

On the North Jetty, bank anglers follow the most liberal regulations for Marine Area 1 or Buoy 10.

Barbless hooks are required to fish for salmon and steelhead from the North Jetty and in the mainstem Columbia River.
