Wild coho salmon retention to close in Willapa and Naselle rivers

Action: Closes wild coho retention.

Effective date: Dec. 8, 2023, until further notice.

Species affected: Wild coho salmon.

Locations and rules:

Naselle River from the mouth to the Crown Mainline (Salme) Bridge:

  • Effective Dec. 8, 2023, until further notice: Salmon minimum size is 12 inches. Daily limit is six (6) including no more than two (2) adults. Release all wild coho and wild Chinook.

Willapa River from the mouth to the Highway 6 Bridge (near the town of Lebam):

  • Effective Dec. 8, 2023, until further notice: Salmon minimum size is 12 inches. Daily limit is six (6) including no more than two (2) adults. Release all wild coho and wild Chinook.

Willapa River, South Fork from the mouth to Pehl Road Bridge:

  • Effective Dec. 8, 2023, until further notice: Salmon minimum size is 12 inches. Daily limit is six (6) including no more than two (2) adults. Release all wild coho and wild Chinook.

Reason for action: Spawner survey data collected to date indicates a lower-than-expected wild coho return to the Willapa and Naselle rivers.

Additional information: In addition to the salmon rules in this emergency Fishing Rule Change, please note other emergency rules in effect for these waters including:

  • Selective gear rules except only one single-point barbless hook allowed are in effect for all species.
  • Release wild rainbow trout.

All areas listed as closed waters in the 2023-24 Washington Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet remain closed. Anglers should continue to check emergency regulations for new and changing seasons or sign up for email notifications on any rule change at https://wdfw.wa.gov/about/lists.
