Wind River, Drano Lake fisheries return to permanent rules

May 19, 2021

Action: Restores the salmon and steelhead angling rules for the Wind River and Drano Lake to those in the 2020-2021 Sport Fishing Rules Pamphlet; all other permanent rules remain in effect.

Effective date: May 20, 2021.

Species affected: Salmon and steelhead.

Location: Wind River - from the mouth to 800 yards downstream of Carson National Fish Hatchery; the mouth is defined by the buoy line markers south of the Highway 14 bridge.

Drano Lake - In the waters downstream of markers on point of land downstream and across from Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery and upstream of the Highway 14 bridge.

Reason for action: The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has managed these fisheries to ensure that increased broodstock goals at Carson and Little White Salmon National Fish Hatcheries (NFH) would be achieved for 2021. The brood stock collection goal for LWSNFH was met earlier in May and the Drano Lake fishery was reopened at a reduced daily limit to mitigate for production uncertainties at other Columbia Basin hatcheries. Broodstock collection at Carson NFH has increased rapidly during the last several days and is projected to be achieved. With broodstock collection at these (and other) facilities met or projected to be met, fisheries can be reopened under permanent rules.

Additional information: Anglers are reminded to check the Washington Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet for additional information.

Information contact: Matt Gardner, District Fish Biologist, 360-906-6746.

Fishers must have a current Washington fishing license, appropriate to the fishery. Check the WDFW "Fishing in Washington" rules pamphlet for details on definitions and regulations.
