ILWACO -- The sport ocean salmon fishing season for Marine Area 1 (Buoy 10 in the Columbia River to Leadbetter Point) will close at midnight tomorrow, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today.

The closure is necessary because fish managers estimate anglers will have harvested 17,200 coho salmon from a quota of 17,500. An additional day of fishing would raise the catch by more than 2,000 salmon over the quota.

While fishing from Ilwaco will close, Westport (Marine Area 2) remains open Sunday through Thursday for coho and chinook. The Buoy 10 fishery in the Columbia River also remains open seven days per week for coho and chinook.
