Description and Range

Physical description

Dolphinfish, also known as Mahi Mahi or Dorado, are an elongate fish with compressed sides. The body fades from green, along the dorsal side, to yellow on the belly. Vertical bars and spots, ranging in color from blue, green, to black, can be seen on the sides of some Dolphinfish. The dorsal and anal fins are very long on this fish and the caudal fin is deeply forked. Mature males have a large crest on their forehead, giving them a distinctive profile.

Dolphinfish can grow up to 210 cm (83 in) in length and 46 kg (101.2 lb) in weight, living at least up to 4 years old.

Geographic range

Dolphinfish are found around the world, but along the Pacific coast they are found from Grays Harbor, WA to Chile. This is typically a warmwater species which is only found at its northern extremes during periods of warming water. Dolphinfish are found between the surface and 200 m (656 ft) in the open ocean. These fish can often be found around floating debris.
