South

This shallow lake is loaded with Westslope Cutthroat Trout  which will grab almost anything. Fish spinners, spoons or flies. The fish are not big, running 7 to 9 inches in length, but will fill up a fry pan nicely. South Lake can be easily fished from the shore. There is one camp site at the inlet end (west) of the lake. This is a hike for those who have some experience with off trail navigation and can hike in rugged terrain.

Getting here:

Drive over the North Cascade Highway to Winthrop and go south 11 more miles to Twisp. The Twisp River Road heads north and west out of town and about 3 miles before its end the South Lake Trail #401 takes off to the west. Hike approximately 6.5 miles to the old burn on the north side of the trail before the trail heads south to South Pass. It’s off trail from here, north to the top of the ridge at 6400’ and then down 300’ to the lake at 6166’.
