Skagit sockeye fishery extension

July 23, 2024

Action: Extends Skagit River sockeye fishery.

Effective date: Immediately through July 31, 2024.

Species affected: Sockeye salmon.

Location: Skagit River, from the Highway 536 bridge (Memorial Highway Bridge) in Mt. Vernon to the Dalles Bridge at Concrete.

Rules: Salmon minimum size 12 inches. Daily limit four sockeye. Release all salmon other than sockeye. Night closure in effect. Selective gear rules not in effect for salmon.

Reason for action: Current data indicates the river sport fishery has not reached the harvest guideline for sockeye, and incidental Chinook encounters remain within conservation goals.

Additional information: This fishery will continue to be actively monitored by WDFW. Anglers are asked to cooperate with creel personnel collecting catch information. Monitoring and evaluation of fisheries is an important part of ensuring we are meeting our conservation goals for salmon, and identifying additional opportunity, like this extension.

In-season closures and other management actions will be announced as soon as possible. Consider downloading the free FishWA app from the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store, and signing up for fishery change notifications by email.
