Middle schools students analyze the positive and negative aspects of wildfires in Washington and learn about historical fire regimes and how Washington ecosystems and wildlife have evolved with fire over thousands of years. Next, students use the U.S. Department of Agriculture Fires Effects Information System (FEIS) to research how one Washington wildlife species relies on fire. The lesson culminates in students analyzing their conceptions of fire in the beginning compared to the end of the lesson.
