Hanson - Upper Pond

One of two small ponds near the town of Cle Elum that are no longer stocked (Upper & Lower Hanson Ponds). The levy separating them from the Yakima River has been breached, thus creating off channel rearing habitat for salmon, steelhead, and wild resident trout.

Fishing regulations for these ponds are the same as the Yakima River:  Catch & release for trout, selective gear regulations, no bait.  Internal combustion motors prohibited.  Closed to fishing for salmon, steelhead & bull trout; please carefully release these species if inadvertantly hooked (see Fishing Regulation Pamphlet).

Two-pole fishing is NOT allowed

Special fishing restrictions:

Shoreline access: Good - Good access, but poor fishing opportunities. Ponds have been breached -- not stocked. Off channel rearing habitat for juvenile fish.

Fishing prospects calendar

Rainbow trout

Fishing success for Rainbow Trout is generally best in the spring when thousands of fish are stocked statewide, but they can be caught year-round in most waters with a little patience and persistence. Success remains high into June and gradually declines as water temperatures increase and fish move offshore to stay cool. Fish that escaped the spring harvest return to the nearshore areas in the fall as waters cool off. Some waters may also be stocked again in the fall further boosting catch rates.
